- Cemetery, any of the eight days: visit a cemetery devoutly and pray for the dead, even if only mentally.
- Church, for All Souls: visit a church or oratory and pray the Our Father and the Creed there. Where the grant is kept on November 2, the visit counts from noon on Sunday, November 1, to midnight at the end of Monday, November 2.
- One plenary indulgence a day. These grants apply only to the souls in purgatory, never to yourself.
The conditions
- The state of grace, at least when the work is finished, and the intention to gain the indulgence (norm 17). Without the state of grace no indulgence is gained.
- Detachment from all sin, even venial. Without it, or if Confession, Communion or the prayer for the Pope’s intention is missing, the indulgence is partial instead (norm 20).
- Sacramental Confession, within about 20 days before or after the work. One Confession serves several plenary indulgences.
- Holy Communion for each plenary indulgence, best received the same day.
- Prayer for the Pope’s intention for each: one Our Father and one Hail Mary, or another prayer of your own devotion.
Eternal Rest
Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Requiescant in pace. Amen.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.
Prayed devoutly, it carries a partial indulgence for the souls in purgatory on any day of the year.
